The COVID-19 pandemic has been an eye opening experience for many. As the days go by we are finding out new things about ourselves and this virus. What we thought and expected of COVID-19 is not necessarily what has happened and for this reason we have had lots to learn. I remember when everything had just started we were told that this virus really doesn’t affect the young as much. But in the weeks that have gone by we continue to watch as COVID takes the lives of so many young and old. Apart from this we have also witnessed a number of unique symptoms that we don't normally see with respiratory infections. One example would be the loss in sense of smell and taste that so many patients have reported. Another example of a very specific sign would be the red or purple bumps that patients are finding on their toes. Many have dubbed these patients as having “COVID toes”. The American Academy of Dermatology has created a registry to keep track of skin manifestations associated with COVID-19. Doctors and physicians are asked to fill out a survey reporting these findings to further analyze and identify similarities among patients. COVID toes are a bit peculiar and while we are not sure why it is occurring, there have been some hypotheses that suggest small blood clots or inflammation of the blood vessel walls may be to blame. Whatever it is, patients should know that it is not life threatening and most patients in the registry that have these signs are in their 20s and 30s and have done well to handle the infection. COVID-19 continues to humble and educate us.
